Today, there are over 370 officially recognized dog breeds worldwide. Among them are some particularly noble four-legged friends that cost lovers of these breeds a lot. PETBOOK takes a closer look at the world’s most expensive dog breeds.
Whether loving family companions, hard-working hunting helpers, or clever sniffers, dogs take on various tasks for which they have been bred for centuries. However, some animals also simply serve their owners as luxurious status symbols. In addition to popular fashion dogs such as the pug or the French bulldog, there are some exclusive breeds that make the hearts of well-heeled dog fans beat faster. But which dog breeds are among the most expensive in the world?
How much does the most expensive dog breed cost?
The Do Khyi, also known as the Tibetan Mastiff, regularly fetches top prices in China. The most expensive dog in the world is the Tibetan Mastiff Dazhewang, which changed hands for the equivalent of 1.5 million euros in 2014, as reported by DerSpiegel. The male Tibetan Mastiff Hong Dong was sold for over one million euros back in 2011.
Tibetan Mastiffs are imposing dogs. They reach a shoulder height of over 60 centimeters and a weight of over 60 kilograms. They are a very old breed that originates from the high plateaus of the Himalayas. There, the animals were originally kept as shepherds, guards, and farm dogs. Its enormous size, strength, and lion-like appearance make the Do Khyi a coveted status symbol, especially in China. In the United States, puppies of this breed are available starting at around 1500 euros. However, depending on the pedigree, sex, and coat color, they can also cost several thousand euros.
These dog breeds are also among the most expensive
In addition to the Do Khyi, for which prices sometimes run into the millions, there are other exclusive and expensive dog breeds around the world.
The Saluki
A purebred Saluki of Arabian descent can cost up to 12,000 euros. This breed is a Persian sighthound that was once bred for hunting gazelles and hares and accompanied the Bedouins through the desert. Today, these graceful, powerful dogs are particularly popular with wealthy Arabs and British nobility. In Europe, Saluki puppies are usually cheaper, but with purchase prices of around 2000 euros, they are still more expensive than many other dog breeds.
The Pharaoh Hound
Visually, this rare Maltese dog breed is reminiscent of a greyhound. The Pharaoh Hound has pointed prick ears, a short, rust-brown coat, and a slender build. Its character is described as intelligent, friendly, and alert. The price for a purebred puppy is around 6000 euros.
Canadian Eskimo Dog
The Canadian Eskimo Dog, also known as Qimmiq, belongs to the Spitz group. The Inuit of North America traditionally used this strong, robust breed as a sled and hunting dog. Its erect ears and curled, bushy tail are typical. The males also have mane-like hair on their necks and shoulders. If you’re interested in purchasing a spirited Canadian Eskimo Dog with a strong character, you can expect to pay around 5000 euros for a puppy.
