Pets have a long-standing tradition among the British royals. For instance, Queen Elizabeth was a lifelong Corgi enthusiast and bred horses. Her grandson William and his wife Kate also share their home with animals. In honor of “Pet Day,” the royal couple proudly introduced their dog, Orla.
On the occasion of “National Pet Day” on April 11, William and Kate shared a snapshot of their family dog on Instagram with more than 16 million followers. The black cocker spaniel, Orla, was a gift from James, Princess Kate’s brother.
“We celebrate the animals that bring so much joy and love into our lives”
Orla joined the royal family in 2020, shortly before the death of their previous dog, Lupo. They had received Lupo in 2011 as a “belated wedding gift” from Kate’s brother James. James Middleton revealed this in his memoir “Meet Ella: The Dog Who Saved My Life.” Years later, it became known that the royal couple received Lupo during a challenging time when William was to be deployed to the Falkland Islands for six weeks.1
Along with the picture, which shows an obviously wet but contented dog, the couple wrote: “On this #NationalPetDay, we celebrate the animals that bring so much joy, companionship, and love into our lives.” Orla is the second dog Prince William and Princess Kate have as a pet. The name is of Celtic origin and means something like “golden princess.”

However, dogs are not the only animals Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis are growing up with. The young family also has a few guinea pigs at home.2
As Prince William revealed at a public event last year, his children have “pretty cool” guinea pigs. However, his children could be better at reliably taking care of the animals. The task of cleaning the cages falls to him, “because the kids forget.”
